Hellenic Train S.A. (Ελληνικοί Σιδηρόδρομοι Α.Ε.) operates all state passenger services on the Greek standard-gauge network. The company runs long-distance, regional and suburban services (“Proastiakos”). Since 2017, it has been a wholly owned subsidiary of the Italian state railway Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS).

Train Categories and Reservations

Intercity (IC)

These trains connect Athens (Αθήνα) and Thessaloniki (Θεσσαλονίκη) as well as Larisa (Λάρισα) and other major cities. The route is electrified and offers the fastest travel times in the country. FIP is fully accepted, but a free seat reservation is mandatory.

Reservations must be obtained in advance. They can be purchased online or on site.

Personal Tip

IC trains are frequently sold out a few days in advance. It is advisable to arrange a reservation in good time.

Tip for travellers with an FIP Coupon: Since individual reservations are not available online, first book an FIP 50 Ticket. This can be cancelled free of charge. On site, you can check whether reservations are still available. If so, cancel the FIP 50 Ticket; otherwise, travel with the FIP 50 Ticket.

Regional Train (REG)

Regional trains connect cities and regions outside the main axis.

Some trains are referred to as Proastiakos or Suburban Railway, which is comparable to an S-Bahn. In the journey planner, these services also appear as regional trains REG.

Hellenic Train operates three tourist or historic train services on which FIP is not accepted.1

According to experience reports, the rack railway between Diakopto and Kalavryta can be used with an FIP Coupon and a free reservation obtainable on site. We are currently unable to verify usability with FIP 50, as services have been temporarily suspended.2

Class Categories

  • Class B: Usable with an FIP Card or FIP Coupon for 2nd class. Most Hellenic Train services only have Class B.
  • Class A: Usable with an FIP Card or FIP Coupon for 1st class. This class exists on some IC trains. Complimentary refreshments, coffee, water and snacks are offered.3

Step 1

Change the language to English or Italian if needed.

Select a suitable connection. The regular ticket price is shown initially. Station names must be entered in the English spelling.

FIP CARD selection

Step 3

In the next step, select “FIP CARD” in the “Offer” field and enter the FIP Card number. The regular ticket price is then reduced by 50%.

For services requiring a reservation, a reservation is added free of charge. Optionally, a seat can be selected by choosing the “Choose seat” option.

For IC trains, reservations can be purchased in combination with an FIP 50 Ticket. Reservations for FIP Coupons are not available online.

Reservations are not available on the train. If you start your journey at a station where the ticket office is unstaffed, tickets can be purchased on the train.4

At public fares, children up to 4 years travel free of charge, children up to 12 years receive a 50% discount on the adult fare. From 12 years, the regular adult fare applies.1

Rebookings and cancellations of FIP 50 Tickets

Before the start of travel, tickets can be cancelled up to 10 minutes before the scheduled departure.5

  • For cancellations up to 48 hours before the scheduled departure time from the departure station, 100% of the face value of the original ticket is refunded.
  • For cancellations between 48 and 2 hours before the scheduled departure time from the departure station, 80% of the face value of the original ticket is refunded.
  • For cancellations less than 2 hours before the scheduled departure time from the departure station and up to the closing of the issuing system, 50% of the face value of the original ticket is refunded.

To cancel a ticket purchased at the ticket office, the ticket must be presented. The ticket price is refunded via the originally chosen payment method. A ticket purchased online can be cancelled at the ticket office or via the telephone hotline by providing the ticket number. The ticket price is refunded via the chosen payment method. Registered users can cancel the ticket themselves via the ticket management in the “My Trips” menu.
