FIP Information
In Greece, FIP 50 Tickets and FIP Coupons are accepted by the state railway Hellenic Train. This applies to almost the entire network operated by Hellenic Train, including long-distance, regional and suburban services (Proastiakos).
FIP benefits can also be used on ships operated by Attica.
FIP tickets are not accepted on urban transport in Athens (Αθήνα) and Thessaloniki (Θεσσαλονίκη).
Interesting
The Greek rail network has been undergoing gradual expansion and modernisation for years, with the Athens – Thessaloniki axis being the most important connection. This route is also electrified. Regional connections outside this main axis are often slower and less frequent.
The quality of trains varies: while modern electric multiple units operate on the main lines, many regional trains are older. Punctuality is average by European standards and depends heavily on the specific route. Particularly scenic routes include the Pelion Railway and the line through the Tempi Valley between Larisa and Katerini. The stations in Thessaloniki and Athens are considered the country’s most important transport hubs.
Arrival and Border Points
Bulgaria
There are currently no train services between Bulgaria and Greece. Previously operated lines, such as Sofia – Thessaloniki, have been discontinued. Travelling between the two countries must therefore be done by long-distance bus or by air.
North Macedonia
There is no scheduled passenger rail service between Greece and North Macedonia. The historic connection between Thessaloniki and Gevgelija/Skopje is currently not in operation. Border crossings cannot therefore be made by train; long-distance buses via the Balkan routes are an alternative.
Albania
There is no rail connection between Albania and Greece.
Turkey
There is currently no direct passenger rail service between Greece and Turkey. The former rail route via Pythio to Edirne/Istanbul is not served by international trains. FIP benefits are also not valid in Turkey. Travellers are therefore advised to use international buses or flights between the two countries.
Italy
The ferry services operated by Attica can be used between Italy and Greece.
